Chapter Three
He looked around, there was nobody but these four. Who could have said that? As they walked he just kept looking around to see if he could see somebody else. “Why are you here? Get out of the forest!” the voice shouted. This time all four of them heard it.
They all looked around, backs toward each other so they couldn't be snuck up on. “Can you see anything Nicholai?” Asked Wilfred. “No, I don't see anything. Do any of you two see anything?” Nicholai replied. “Nope nothing here.” Said Michael. Same reply from Jonathan.
None of them could see anything. They were all scared. Who shouted? Why couldn't any of them see anything? Nicholai stepped forward “who are you?” He shouted. “I am the entity of the castle!” The voice shouted back. He turned to Wilfred and Michael “can you two please help Jonathan out of here as fast as you can?” They grabbed him and they all ran as fast as they could.
“Haha, you think you can outrun me do you?” The entity said laughing. “I am everywhere.” Jonathan started lifting off the floor. The two men grabbed onto him to try to keep him on the floor. All three of them went up. “Nicholai, come to my castle, that is why you are here. If you agree I will put them down gently, if you say no I will throw them.”
“Let the entity throw us Nicholai, it's better than putting your own life in danger!” Shouted Wilfred. “I will not endanger three people just to save myself! He screamed. “Fine, put them down and I will come!” The entity started laughing hysterically. The men got put gently back onto the floor.
They all ran towards the car. “Do not get in the car!” The entity shouted. They froze on the spot, looking around, wondering where they could hide. “Just run as far as you can.” Nicholai shouted. “It wants me.” “One of us should stay with you!” said Michael. “It’s going to take you both to carry Jonathan.
The three men refused to leave Nicholai completely on his own, worried what the entity would do to him. “GO NOW!” Shouted the entity. The three men just stood still and looked at Nicholai. “No, we do not want to leave him here on his own.” Wilfred said sternly. They helped Jonathan to the floor then sat next to him. The entity started humming menacingly. It started off slow but sped up the closer it sounded to the three men. Still they sat there not a single movement, not even blinking.
The humming was so loud to them now as if the entity was right on top of them. They looked up and Michael and Wilfred saw nothing but Jonathan could see black eyes with bright yellow pupils staring at them. Jonathan froze just staring into the eyes. “Michael, I think we need to go.” He said shakily.
Jonathan tried to stand up on his own but he just fell back down to his knees. He was still too weak. He tried again and ended up down on his knees. This time Michael helped him up, they turned to Wilfred and tried to get him to go. He refused.
Jonathan and Michael started walking away. The entity started clicking its tongue. Then shouted “WILFRED GO WITH THEM!” Wilfred looked up, he could now see the whole face of the entity. He just sat staring at it, not wanting to move so Nicholai would not be left on his own. “I am not going!” Wilfred replied sternly.
“Wilfred, I think you should come with us.” Said Jonathan. “The eyes are getting brighter and brighter when you say no. I think you are making the entity angry.” He continued. Wilfred stood up, walked over and stood next to Nicholai. “If he stays then I stay.” He said sternly.
Wilfred dropped to the floor and crossed his legs. Refusing to move. He started raising up, staying in the position he was sat in. “Put him down!” Shouted Nicholai. “He is just protecting me, even though I am a stranger to him.”
Wilfred just kept going higher and higher up. “Not until he says he will go.” Wilfred started laughing. “I guess I'm going to space then as I am not going anywhere.”
The entity made a high pitched screeching. “That won't change my mind, I have children I’ve heard worse.” Wilfred said laughing. This seemed to anger the entity. Nicholai looked up at Wilfred. “Please go, I will be fine.” He said. “Nicholai will not be hurt.” The entity said. Wilfred looked shocked.
Everything he had heard over the years, what was said completely contradicted it all. “Okay, put me down and I will go.” Wilfred said sadly. He was still unsure if what the entity said was true or not. How could he believe it after everything he had heard of all the people being hurt or dying to this entity.
He was put back on the floor and he started walking off slowly, turning around to check on Nicholai every couple of steps. “How will he get to Antykla, he's never been there before.” Wilfred asked. “I will find my way there, don't worry about me.” was Nicholai's response. Wilfred went out of sight.
Nicholai stood there, it seemed like he was alone but he knew he wasn't. There was a sound, like wind blowing through the trees but there was no breeze. Which is weird for December. “Why is there no breeze?” Nicholai muttered to himself. “It is the trees stopping it from coming down this low. The noise is the leaves at the top of each tree with the wind.” The entity replied.
Nicholai kept trying to find the entity to see what it looked like. All he could see was the eyes, exactly as Jonathan explained them. “No point looking, you won't see me until I let you.” Nicholai looked in the direction he thought he heard the voice come from. There was nothing.
A laugh started, it was coming from everywhere. Nicholai was confused. “How are you doing this? I can't pinpoint where you are.” The laughing stopped. “Thats the whole idea, Nicholai! You will not figure out where I am.” Then the laughing started again.
Nicholai started walking. “Where are you going?” Asked the entity. “Well, you are just laughing and not actually saying anything, I'm going to find Wilfred, Jonathan and Michael.” He replied. The entity stopped laughing.
All was silent. Nicholai carried on walking the way the other men went. “Stop!” Shouted the entity. “You know my name, what is yours?” Nicholai asked boldly. “Not yet Nicholai, maybe I will tell you at my castle.” “I want to know now or I go!” Nicholai exclaimed.
The entity seemed like it was gone so Nicholai started walking again. “STOP!” Is all he heard echo through the forest. The other men heard it. “Nicholai, I am coming.” Wilfred shouted in the distance. It was very quiet, they must be quite far but how? Jonathan ended up being seriously injured.
Nicholai looked around again, he still couldn't see anything but trees. Only his shadow and the shadows of the trees surrounding him. He started walking again. This time the voice did not shout. He just got lifted off the floor. “Put me down, I am going.” Nicholai said.
He flew across the forest, looking at the top of the trees. He fell into them, as he went past a branch he grabbed it and curled around it to stop himself from hitting the floor. “Let go!” Shouted the entity. “NO!” Nicholai snapped back. “If I let go you will throw me to the floor. I will not let you hurt me.”
The branch snapped, he went hurtling through all the trees on this branch as if it was a rocket. Nicholai let go and fell to the floor. He got up and ran as fast as he could. There was a shed just ahead of him. He carried on hoping he would make it.
A head popped up in the window of the shed. It was Michael. His eyes opened wide as if he was scared of what he could see. Nicholai stopped and turned around. He did not see anything. He turned back and Michael still had the look of fear on his face. He started running again, just as he got to the shed it disappeared.
He looked around. It wasn't on the floor, he looked up and it wasn't floating in the air. What had happened to it? Then it just reappeared. He ran inside and the men weren’t there. He stood confused. “Nicholai, I am here.” He could hear Michaels voice shouting but he could not see him.
Wilfred barged through the door. “You made it here. But how?” Asked Wilfred. “I just ran as fast as I could.” Nichlai said. Michael and Jonathan were saying Nicholai’s and Wilfred’s names over and over. “Where are they?” Nicholai asked. “We are right in front of you!” Shouted Michael.
Michael appeared after walking out the door and back into the shed. “We can see you now.” Said Wilfred. There was a hysterical laugh coming from outside but it sounded quiet, as if it was far away. “Do not fall for it, the entity could be right next to us.” Explained Nicholai. The laughing stopped.
Wilfred looked out of the door, he noticed Antykla wasn’t that far away. He went back to the other men. “Hey, my town is right near here. We can make it there soon.” He told them. They all looked out of the window. They could see the gates. “Is this not a trick? The entity could be making us see the gates.” Jonathan questioned.
Michael went outside, he turned to the gates and started walking towards them. “Michael, where are you going?” Asked Jonathan. He did not answer, he seemed to be in a daze. Like he was hypnotised. Wilfred ran to him and shook him saying his name. There was no reaction to the shaking or response to his name. He just carried on walking.
Nicholai ran and grabbed him, he had seen past the entities tricks and noticed it was in fact a drop that Michael was heading towards, not Antykla. The gates disappeared and Michael seemed to wake up from the daze. He looked at Nicholai and then turned to the other men. He said “Nicholai we need to get over there, all of us in the shed.” The four of them ran back to the shed. Michael shut the door behind them. He went into another room and found a candle. He lit it.
“What is the candle for?” asked Jonathan. “I had a vision that if we light this candle it stops the entity from messing with us. Kind of like it stops the magic it uses.” The other three men looked shocked. “What do you mean a vision?” asked Wilfred. “It was explaining the candle and how to escape the entity to the safety of the towns as it cannot enter through gates.”
The group looked around to see if there was anything they could use to carry the candle. This was to make sure the wind does not blow it out. Jonathan, the only one who was not able to move properly just looked around from where he was. They all looked around in different rooms. “Guys, come here.” shouted Jonathan. “I think I see something.” The others came running. “What is it?” Asked Wilfred. “I don't see it properly but it is over there in the corner under that board.”
Michael ran over to the corner Jonathan was pointing at. There was something there, Michael lifted the board. It looked like a lantern but there was nothing in it. He picked it up and carried it back to the group. They all looked at it. “Do you think it’s big enough to fit the candle?” Jonathan asked. They all looked at it again. “It is broken, some of the glass is smashed.” Nicholai said. Wilfred looked around again and noticed some stuff that might work to cover the broken glass. He grabbed it and brought it over. “What is that?” Asked Michael. “It looks like a sheet of something that should cover it just to keep the wind out.” Wilfred said.
Jonathan took it from Wilfred. He looked at it and after feeling it he said “yes, it should work. Do you think it will give us enough time to get to your town?” Wilfred looked at it again, with the material it may start to melt depending on how wide the candle is.” They place the candle in the lantern and then attach the sheet to the lantern. There was plenty of room for the candle to sit without melting the sheet. “Oh, we will make it there no issues, if not it will at least get us almost there.” The men all stood near each other, Wilfred and Nicholai carrying Jonathan why Michael carried the lantern. They all walked along together. They could hear huffing all around them. It seemed like the entity was getting annoyed that it could not see or hear the men. They just walked trying not to step on anything.
